This is a sterling silver vesta case (portable matchbox) made in 1903 by the Birmingham silversmith William Hair Haseler.
Both sides are hand-engraved by a skilled craftsman with flowing acanthus leaf scroll patterns covering every inch. The "bright-cut" technique, in which the angle of the graver is varied to reflect light in multiple directions, is used to give it a gorgeous shimmer depending on the angle. A shield-shaped cartouche is provided in the center of the front, with a classical monogram adding a touch of elegance.
The interior still retains an elegant gold gilt, and the ring on the side is for attaching it to a pocket watch chain (Albert chain). Although there is some minor wear from age, the lid spring is firm and it opens and closes smoothly. Today, it can add a touch of quality to your daily life as a mint tablet container or pill case.
