This is a sterling silver vesta case (portable matchbox) made in 1903 by the Birmingham silversmith Samuel M. Levi..
The near-square, refined form features deeply hand-engraved scrolling acanthus leaves on both sides, crafted by a skilled artisan.. The "bright-cut" technique, in which the angle of the burin is varied to reflect light in multiple directions, has been used, and a delicate dotted border accentuates the overall design.. A classical monogram is engraved within the cartouche on the front, and the original gold gilding on the interior remains in beautiful condition..
While there is some fine wear consistent with age, there are no noticeable dents, and the lid opens and closes smoothly.. It makes for a lovely item, whether attached to a pocket watch chain or kept in your everyday carry as a mint or pill case..
