This is an antique sterling silver vesta case (match holder) made by S&A in Birmingham, England, in 1899..

Despite its adorable miniature size of approximately 11g that fits perfectly in the palm of your hand, both sides are deeply hand-engraved with flowing scrollwork characteristic of the late Victorian era, highlighting the dramatic contrast unique to solid silver. The bottom features a striker (file pattern) used at the time to strike matches, and since it comes with a jump ring, it can also be enjoyed as a pendant top or key charm..

While there are fine scratches due to age and a slight dent on the side, the hinge and spring mechanism function securely.
