This Edwardian sterling silver napkin hook (napkin clip) was made in 1904 by the Birmingham, England silversmith C.E. Williams.
The circular face is hand-engraved with a delicate leafy design surrounding a heart-shaped cartouche, using the traditional bright-cut engraving technique, in which the angle of the graver is varied to create a lustrous finish. The central ring slides to grip the fabric, and the hook at the top attaches to a collar or buttonhole.
The Birmingham anchor and the lion passant hallmark indicating sterling silver remain clearly visible on the reverse. Though it has minor signs of wear from age, the mechanism opens and closes smoothly. Originally intended as a dining accessory, it can also be enjoyed in creative ways with modern outfits, such as as a scarf clasp or hat cord clip.
