This cup is called a christening cup.
It seems that it was given as a birth gift for children born into aristocratic or wealthy families.

This is a work by Arthur Sibley of London, England, circa 1868.
It is beautifully engraved all over, and the cartouche features a monogram that is believed to be the initials of the first owner.
It is made of thick silver, and although it is small, it is heavy and solidly built.
