Mechanical pencils have a long history, having been produced since the 18th century.

This was made by Lucas&Co. of Birmingham, England in 1886.
The sterling silver pen barrel has a twisted design.
Although it is not an extendable type, the pen barrel is long enough to make it easy to write with.

Although there is some wear over the years, it has been well maintained and is in beautiful condition. The mechanism that rotates the nib to advance the lead works perfectly.
- The shaft is hallmarked for pure silver by the UK Assay Office.
