This is a cut-glass jar with a sterling silver lid, crafted between the late 19th and early 20th centuries by the New York-based silversmithing workshop "Wilcox & Evertsen.".
The surface of the lid features graceful Rococo-style acanthus leaves and small flowers in relief, created using the "repoussé" technique of hammering metal from the reverse side, with an engraved "M" monogram in the center adding a touch of elegance. The thick glass body is deeply carved with an intricate hobstar pattern characteristic of the American Brilliant Period (the golden age of American cut glass), which, combined with its substantial weight of approximately 459g, beautifully reflects the light..
While there are slight dents and scuffs on the sides of the sterling silver lid and minor chips in the cut glass, these do not detract from the overall aesthetic. As a bonbonnière (small container) to hold cotton balls or accessories on your dresser, it adds a classical touch to your daily space.
