These cufflinks were made around the 1970s by Wedgwood, one of Britain’s leading ceramic manufacturers. Crafted from traditional stoneware known as Black Basalt, they feature a finely detailed relief portrait of an ancient Roman emperor crowned with laurel.
The contrast between the matte black finish and the sterling silver mounts with silver gilt lends them the refined elegance characteristic of Neoclassicism. The mounts and fittings bear the lion passant hallmark indicating British sterling silver, and the original case is included. Age-related discoloration and some wear to the plating are visible on the reverse fittings and bezel edges, but the cameo surfaces are in good condition. The understated black cameo adds an air of intellectual refinement to a gentleman’s cuffs, whether worn with a suit or for a formal occasion.
